Despite improved understanding of the biology of schizophrenia and development of new treatments, the long-term course of schizophrenia is still unpredictable. Many of the most effective treatments for schizophrenia are based on the patient’s responses to stimuli. However, not all patients respond to the same stimuli in the same manner. The use of biofeedback as an adjunctive treatment for schizophrenia is an excellent opportunity to develop a means to increase the sensitivity of patients to their environment. Biofeedback is a technique in which a subject is trained to change and modulate physiological responses of his or her own body. Biofeedback training is based on the principle that a person’s emotional response to external stimuli can be trained to change. This technique has been used to increase the control over physiological functions such as heart rate, muscle tension, skin temperature and blood pressure. It is now feasible to measure other variables of mental functioning and to use them as biofeedback targets.
