The effect of ethanol on subcellular distribution of DNA and RNA in rat liver.
A significant portion of the ethanol administered to a rat is metabolized by the liver and absorbed in the bloodstream. Therefore, we investigated the effect of ethanol treatment on the subcellular distribution of DNA and RNA in liver cells. Rats were fed a liquid diet containing 3% (w/v) ethanol for 7 days. The levels of ethanol in the serum and liver of the rats were similar to those observed in human alcoholic patients. The level of ethanol in the liver reached 10-20 times higher than that in the serum. Ethanol treatment significantly increased the amount of DNA and RNA in the nuclei and mitochondria. The content of DNA and RNA in the cytosol, however, did not change. The result suggests that ethanol affects subcellular distribution of DNA and RNA in liver cells.Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake and Functional Capacity in Older Adults.
